The Pskov Republic is a medieval Russian state that existed between the second half of the 13th century and the first half of the 16th century.
After the collapse of Kievan Rus in the XII century, the city of Pskov and its adjacent possessions along the Velikaya River, along the Peipsi and Pskov Lakes, as well as the Narva River, became part of Novgorod land. Pskov had special rights, including the right to independently build suburbs (one of the oldest is Izborsk).
As a result of the successful participation of Pskov in the struggle against the Livonian Order, the influence of the city as a part of the Novgorod feudal republic significantly increased, which ultimately led to its actual autonomy, especially after the victory in the Battle of Rakovors in 1268. A particularly significant contribution to the process of separation of Pskov from Novgorod belongs to Prince Dovmont (1266-1299).
Dovmont, in the baptism of Timothy (died May 20, 1299) - Pskov prince of Lithuanian descent, who ruled from 1266 to 1299. Repeatedly defeated the Lithuanians and Germans, including in the Battle of Rakovors. Under Dovmont, Pskov gained actual independence from Novgorod.
Dovmont came from Lithuanian princes. According to some sources, he was the son of Mindovg, the brother of Wojszelka, according to other sources he was the elder brother of Troyden, and owned in Lithuania the Nalshchansky inheritance. He was married, according to one version, to the sister of his wife Mindovg, according to the Chronicle of Bykhovets, to the sister of his wife Narimont, who was later taken from him last, but in the Chronicle of Bykhovets this story is presented in a different light. He was directly involved in the murder of Mindovg in 1263. Later fell into disfavor with the son of Mindovg Wojszelka, who in 1264 advanced as the most powerful prince in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
After the conquest by Prince Vojscielk, Nalschan Dovmont fled to Pskov in 1265, where he settled with the clear intention of fighting Vojskel and his vassals in Polotsk, which at that time was actually dependent on Lithuania. In Pskov, he was baptized, and soon the Pskovites elected him as their prince. In the same year, Dovmont defeated the Lithuanian army on the banks of the Dvina River and devastated the area of Prince Gerden, capturing his wife and sons.
Dovmont at the Monument to the 1000th Anniversary of Russia in Veliky Novgorod Grand Prince Yaroslav Yaroslavich, dissatisfied with the election of Dovmont, was preparing to expel him from Pskov, but due to the refusal of the Novgorodians to help him, he had to disband his troops. The next year, the Novgorodians even went with the Pskovites to Lithuania under the leadership of Dovmont, who ended this campaign with victory.
In 1268, Dovmont was called by Novgorodians to help against the Livonian knights and, together with Prince Dimitri Alexandrovich and the squads of Grand Duke Yaroslav Yaroslavich, fought under Rakovor.
In 1269, the great master of the order, having gained considerable strength, besieged Pskov, but Dovmont managed to defend the city - the Novgorodians came to the rescue, and the great master, wounded by Dovmont, was forced to make peace.
