Up For Sale Is A Authentic New World Spanish Two-Bits Also Known As Pieces Of 8 Bronze Cob Coin.
This wonderful coin planchet dates from the 1500's through 1600's, during the "Golden Age" of piracy in Europe. They were land-found at the site of a late Medieval seaports in Spain, where pirates were believed to have raided Spanish galleons for their riches. Although it is impossible to prove exactly who may have handled these coins, they were the standard currency at the time and have been found at known pirate sites.
Two-bits, four-bits, six-bits, and eight-bits make reference to the eight-reales coin of New Spain and Mexico. It is also called a "piece of eight" and circulated in the English Colonies and freely in the US following the Revolutionary War. It is the renowned piece of eight that became part of the Spanish Main pirate lore (ie Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie Franchise).
The coins minted until 1734 technically, are called a cob coins, because they were originally made by hand stamping “tail ends of bars” or “cabos de barra”, which were sliced as planchets from rudely cast, more or less round bars
Cobs did not start pouring-out into world marketplaces until the reign of Phillip II, after 1556. These crudely minted reales undated until 1580.
