    Description

    Scarce small bronze trachy
Bronze trachy, Teodor (I) Peter (IV) (1186-1197) and Ivan Asen I of Bulgaria (1186-1196)
    Size and weight:
    (24x24) mm, 1.83 grams
Saint crowning the Bulgarian King / Christ enthroned. DO plate 25, #1-5.
These trachies were issued between 1195 and 1200 in Bulgaria, and were imitating various Byzantine trachies. These are scarcer than the slightly later (and somewhat similar) Latin trachies.
Bulgaria was a significant European power in the 9th and the 10th century, while fighting with the Byzantine Empire for the control of the Balkans. The Bulgarian state was crushed by a determined Byzantine assault under Basil II in 1018. It was re-established only in 1185.
