  • Condition: Cnut, called the Great, was king of England, Denmark and Norway in that order. After centuries of forays into England by Viking forces, the land finally fell to Cnut in 1016. As Prince of Denmark, he gained the throne 2 years later and then claimed the throne of Norway a decade after that. He?s generally considered to have been a wise king and his lands were prosperous. His full history is quite interesting and well worth reading up on. He?s a popular king for coin collectors as well and it?s difficult to keep them in stock. This is one of his pennies, catalogued as Spink #1157 and North #781. The obverse reads CNVT REX ANGLORVM (Cnut, King of England). The reverse reads BRAND MO STAN. Brand is the moneyer and Stamford is the mint (a less common mint that some).
