Description
Presented is a wonderful American silver large soup ladle by Samuel Kirk. This piece dates to around the 1830s. The terminal of the ladle is engraved with the surname 'English' in elegant script. The handle of the ladle has a deep arch to it, and the bowl is wide and round. The ladle is very well constructed and sturdy, with a good weight to it. This is a handsome piece of antique American silver by a very renowned maker, and would make an excellent addition to any collection. This piece is in excellent condition. There is some surface wear, particularly to the bottom of the bowl, as is to be expected of a piece of this age. There are no splits, no bends, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
This piece is hallmarked with the maker's mark for Samuel Kirk and is marked 11/12, for the silver purity. This standard of silver is 917/1000, which is higher than coin (900) but lower than sterling (925). This is a fairly early Kirk mark, in use around 1830.
